As teachers Mo Willem's books have always been a integral part of our classroom libraries. We love watching kids answer the Pigeon, identify with Trixie and giggle at the Ducklings attempt to get the hot dog. But Mo's most loved characters in our classrooms have always been Elephant & Piggie. Below you'll find our favorites, lessons Elephant & Piggie have taught us and a fun treasure hunt. Interested in adding Elephant & Piggie books to your library? Click on the book covers and titles.

Lessons Elephant & Piggie Have Taught Us

Imagination

Picture
"Pretending is when you act like something you are not."

"You can just go out and pretend to be something you are not!?"
"Sure. Everyone pretends."
"Even grown-up people?"
"All the time."

Elephant & Piggie teach us to use our imagination to pretend to be anything we want. Everyone pretends, even adults!

Friendship

Picture
"If they are having that much fun together, then ... maybe they do not need us."

"Have fun with your new friend."

Elephant & Piggie teach us to trust our friendships and we can have more than one friend.

Think Outside the Box

Picture
"This is not working."
"We need a new idea..."

Elephant & Piggie teach us if you're not having success with something you can work together and try another way.

Accepting Help

Picture
"I am not flying!"
"You are not flying?"
"I am getting help."

Elephant & Piggie teach us that sometimes we need to ask for help and it is ok to accept help from others to reach our goals.

Positive Outlook

Picture
"Maybe we can have fun, too ...."
"We can try."

Elephant & Piggie teach us to look for the fun in every situation, even if we cannot see it at first.

Picture
"You are right, Gerald. I did not really throw the ball very far."
"But, I had fun!"
"La, la, la!"

Piggie teaches us you might not be great at everything but you can have fun doing anything.

Teamwork

Picture
"With a little help,"
"we can all have"
"BIG FUN!"

Elephant & Piggie teach us our differences can be strengths when we work together.

Perseverance

Picture
"Gerald, it does not say that you cannot try!"

Elephant & Piggie teach us even if someone tells you that you cannot do something you can always try. You can persevere and have success.

Be Flexible

Picture
"Our plans are ruined."
"WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO NOW!?!"
"We could play "Pirate."

Elephant & Piggie teach us if something is not working it's ok to have other ideas and try something else.
