Happy October! Welcome back pumpkin spice, sweater weather and the constant, "Is Halloween tomorrow?" questions! The colder weather is the perfect opportunity to cuddle up and read. Scholastic Reading Clubs' October flyers bring us creepy characters, silly pumpkins and fun Halloween adventures. If you missed my post last month, you can still check out my September Book Recommendations.
Of course there are always lots of great books in the book orders - these just happen to be my VERY favorites and ones I HIGHLY suggest to parents and teacher friends! Here are some ideas for October...

My students' love for graphic novels grew last year when they discovered Babymouse. In Babymouse #9 - Monster Mash, Babymouse is determined to have the best Halloween costume and party but things keep getting in the way. You can also find Babymouse #13 Cupcake Tycoon on Scholastic's website.
Ivy + Bean's adventures become quite popular with my chapter book readers. In this book Ivy and Bean discover there's a ghost in the school bathroom. More Ivy + Bean adventures are available on the Scholastic website, too!
Scholastic has many books available that are written or illustrated (or both) by our October Author of the Month, Peter Brown. You can save by buying all three together in the Peter Brown Pack. My students love those Creepy Carrots every year and we laugh as they trick Jasper! My Teacher is a Monster is a personal favorite of mine. I love watching the subtle changes in the teacher as Bobby gets to know her.
Some of my new favorite nonfiction books are part of the "Did you Know" series. Learn facts about animals and planets in these fun to read nonfiction books. Did you know that ants take up to 250 naps per day? The colorful humorous illustrations draw readers in as they learn lots of cool facts.
On September 15th we celebrated Dot Day in our classroom and now you can add two books from Peter H. Reynold's Creatrilogy collection to your home libraries. The Dot tells the story of Vasti who thinks she can't draw but learns to just make a mark and see where it takes you. In ish Raymond loves to draw, anytime, anything, anywhere but after his brother makes a careless comment, Raymond struggles to find joy in drawing. Thankfully Raymond's sister reminds him there's not "right" way to create art! Your little artists will love creating along with Vasti and Raymond.
Remember that adding Scholastic books to your home library supports your child's classrooms and allows their teacher to add even more books to their classroom library! Share some of your favorites from this month's flyers in the comments below!
Happy Reading,
